East London’s Vixens ladies team won their second match in a row with a 27-12 home victory over Wymondham Wasps Ladies at the Memorial Ground in West Ham on Sunday (5 Feb).
Five tries secured the win in the Women’s National Challenge 1 East fixture to leave the Vixens sixth in the table after eight games.
Inside centre Inna Schwalger opened the scoring for the Vixens on five minutes with a powerful burst into the left corner. The conversion was missed (5-0). Five minutes later, fly-half Lucy Thomas set up the chance for right wing Whitney Bennet to score in the opposite corner. The conversion was missed (10-0).
Wymondham scored a converted try under the posts on 16 minutes (10-7) and that’s how the score remained until the interval.
The Vixens came out of the blocks quickest and replacement prop Christine Kizito bundled her way over the line on 42 minutes. The conversion was missed (15-7). The visitors narrowed the gap to three points with an unconverted try four minutes later (15-12).
Bennet thought she had added another score for the Vixens but the ball was adjudged to have been held up over the line. They didn’t have to wait long however before outside centre Freya Challis scored following a crash ball surge from replacement centre Ally Bartholomew. Number 8 Katie Gemal converted (22-12). Gemal rounded off the scoring on 33 minutes with a try but her conversion attempt hit the crossbar (27-12).
